Yurt
Basics
The James Peak Yurt is located several miles north of Black Hawk, Colorado
at 10,600 feet. The distance to the hut from the trailhead is about 2
miles. The yurt sleeps 6 people on comfortable, new, bunks. It is located
near the new James Peak Wilderness area with spectacular views of James
Peak (See Photo Gallery).
The yurt provides excellent
shelter in both summer and winter. It is equipped with a woodburning stove,
firewood, a propane cooking stove, all necessary cooking equipment (pots,
pans, silverware, plates, etc.), outhouse, basic furniture, and lights
for the evening.
In the winter, you will melt
snow for water, and in the summer, there is a spring. It is recommended
that you boil or purify all drinking water for your safety.
More detailed information is
contained in the Group Leader's
Form.
Pets
Pets of any kind are not allowed. Because you are boiling snow for water,
animals present a serious health hazard if they are allowed near the yurt.
In addition to this concern, there are concerns with animal waste and
the harrassment of wildlife.
Getting
to the Yurt
The time it takes to get to the yurt could vary significantly from party
to party depending on weather, skill, and physical ability. It is important
to leave yourself plenty of time to get there safely. Remember, you will
be carrying a full pack, so it may take you longer to get there than you
think.
While the trail has some markers, it is important that you carry a map
and compass and know how to use them. A GPS is also an extremely helpful
tool. Please see Getting There for
more specific information on maps. It is recommended that EACH member
of your group should have a copy of the map in case you get separated.
Making a
Reservation
When you reserve the hut, you reserve the entire hut. The rates are $120/night
for weekends and holidays, and $100/night for weeknights. It is recommended
that you reserve the yurt for more than one night to truly enjoy a relaxing
backcountry experience. See Rates &
Availability for more information.
There are no refunds for the
yurt. You may make a change or cancellation with 30-days advance notice.
If you need to cancel your reservation, and you are doing so more than
30 days in advance, you will receive an 80% credit toward a future yurt
reservation. Credits must be taken within one year of your original booking
or they will expire. Cancellations made less than 30 days prior to your
reservation will result in forgeiture of your payment.
